Moderate cycle between towns in the north of Mallorca
An easy ride if you are used to road biking and at 44km this route could be a good challenge for a beginner!
This ride begins at the marina in Puerto de Pollensa, from there you head towards Alcudia. From the marina it is your choice to take either the bypass road along the back of Puerto Pollensa which features a smooth cycle path and very little traffic, or keep heading along the seafront road. The main road from Puerto Pollensa to Alcudia is relatively busy but has a large cycle path on either side. Continue along this 5km road until the first round about in Alcudia. Here you take the right turn to the Ma-13A.
For the rest of the ride there will not be cycle paths and traffic will be moving quite fast. On approach to the next round about keep to the left lane and do not follow the slip road, take the third exit following signs to Arta/Can Picafort where you join the Ma-3460 and shortly take the slip road to Arta on the Ma-3470. This road is around 3.5km, generally in very good condition but still no cycle path. The next roundabout will have signs to Sa Pobla (Ma-3433), the road here is very long with corn fields on either side and you may see quite a few other road cyclists here. Although there are quite a few cars on this stretch there are very few buses which is one of the reasons it is so popular. If cycling in a group, it is advised to cycle in single file as this road is not wide enough to cope with large groups of cyclists.
At about 3.5km along this road you will come to a bridge after a sharp bend, traffic coming in the direction of Sa Pobla have right of way on this bridge so it is best to slow down and be prepared to stop to let cars pass. Continue for another 5km after this where you will reach the outskirts of the town of Sa Pobla. Now is a good chance to take a tour of the town, rest and grab a drink. Sa Pobla is a gateway to other cycle destinations such as Campanet, Inca and Lluc, that way you can turn a mornings ride into more of a day trip. Alternatively you can take an extra few km to reach Muro or continue back to Pollenca.
To get back to Pollenca from Sa Pobla, continue along the Ma-3420 on the outskirts of Sa Pobla which heads towards the large roundabout above the motorway exit to Pollensa. Continue straight through the roundabout to get to the familiar road (Ma-2200) that takes you from the motorway to the old town of Pollenca and then to Puerto Pollenca. The road surface here is fairly smooth with a few small climbs and bends. From the last roundabout to the original starting point is around 18km.
The route is very well sign posted throughout and is enjoyable as it is quite flat and on good road conditions.
