Corpus Christi - Ball de les Aguiles i Sant Joan Pelos, Pollença
Ancient tradition featuring the Ball de les Àguiles
The feast of Corpus Christi in Pollença is an ancient fiesta unique to Pollença. It features the 'Ball de les Àguiles' or dance of the eagles and the ritual dance of 'Sant Joan Pelós'.
This religious celebration takes place sixty days after Easter Sunday. The procession begins after Mass, at sunset, in the main church square. 'Sant Joan Pelós' (Saint John the Baptist) leads the procession dressed in a green silk dress with a red cape, a mask, a cross in his hand and a lamb in his arms. He is followed by his two 'eagles' (disciples) – two young women dressed in jewelled white costumes styled with gold – who dance at the front of the procession, behind Sant Joan, while they play the 'castanyoles' or castanets
Sant Joan Pelós also a very old ritualised dance that dates back to the Middle Ages. After the procession, Sant Joan and the eagles do the 'taules', visiting local homes where they're offered sweets.
