Jellyfish Warning System for Mallorca Beaches
Research Institute wants to pool information on sightings for safer beaches
The Marine Research Institute in Mallorca are to introduce a jellyfish warning system for beaches around Mallorca.
Such a system already exists on the Catalan coast where alerts are put out early to advise if a particular beach is threatened by a smack of jellyfish (yes that's the official term for a congregation of jellyfish...) and counter-measures can be taken.
Beaches in Mallorca are rarely affected by jellyfish for more than a few days each summer.
Nevertheless the infrastructure is already in place and the warning system could start operating as early as this summer. Using the network of lifeguards, fishermen, police, coast guards and the navy to convey jellyfish sightings, information can then be made publicly available on the internet and notice-boards.
Certain suncreams come with protection against stings, which prevents the venom released by the tentacles from penetrating the skin.
