In Palma, as in many Spanish towns and cities, the regulated street parking areas hold benefits for local residents and businesses. The local council have claimed that these new machines will only enhance the management of these benefits.

Locals and businesses registered with the 'Zona ORA' scheme can get reduced rates for parking the designated areas. So good news for locals...but maybe less so for tourists on the Island? The new system implemented requires you to enter your vehicle registration number when purchasing a ticket; a positive in that loosing your ticket or if it happens to be obscured from view then there is still a record of payment, so no fine! But the negative means that you will not be able to pass your ticket on to other motorists if you have not fully utilised your time. Some claim that this is a ploy to make more money, as effectively the same parking space will be paid for twice.

For locals, residents and businesses entering your vehicle registration number should mean that discount rates are applied quickly and effectively. There will also be the option to add time to your parking space using your mobile phone, thus meaning you no longer have to run back to put another ticket on the car when your time runs out! A definite bonus for those who are enjoying a long lunch by the beach or get distracted by the magnificent sights of the city of Palma de Mallorca.

So, one thing to note when parking in Palma, once you have found a space...remember to check your car registration number (especially if you have hired a car) as you will be required to enter it in order to complete the ticket purchase!
