Yacht Club Cala d'Or Restaurant Review

Lovely food in a great location overlooking the pretty harbour

After last weeks expensive mistake of ordering lobster without first checking the price I was worried about dining out in Mallorca. My self inflicted austerity measures dictated that if I was to eat out in one of the many restaurants in Mallorca this week it would have to be on a more meagre budget than I was used to.

By a rather fortuitous stroke of luck I found the very thing I was looking for, a good meal on a small budget, in Cala d'Or today at the yacht club. I had not expected to be able to eat lunch at the Cala d'Or Yacht Club as I am neither a yacht owner or a club member. Post lobster-gate my funds are unlikely to allow me to purchase a yacht and I have never been a fan of clubs so I was rather pleased when I was shown to a seat on the clubs terrace and offered a drink and two menus.

The Cala d'or Yacht Club enjoys an elevated position at the end of the marina with views of the boats below. The outdoor area is perfect for an alfresco lunch as it catches the midday to early evening sun and diners can choose to relax on the couches and enjoy bar snacks or sit at proper tables and enjoy the menu of the day. The terrace is not just home to the dining area but also a crystal clear infinity pool which, although it is only available to members, makes the experience all the more relaxing.

I chose from the menu of the day which had three options for starter, main course and desert. My chicken Ceasar salad was one of the best I've had this summer with a good mixture of fresh greens and chopped onions, tasty grilled chicken and just a thin drizzling of salad dressing. I have been disappointed this summer by a lot of salads that are coated in a thick gloopy dressing but this one was crisp and fresh.

For my main course I had chosen lamb tagine with rice. This portion was a little smaller but perfectly reasonable and although the lamb would have benefited from slightly longer in the pot it was a very tasty dish, especially the rice which was seasoned with herbs and spices.

Finally I had chocolate cake for desert. Light, moist sponge and a thick, rich topping made this a definite hit with me. I'm not sure if it was home made but to be honest I didn't care.

Although I had decided to just eat it is possible to make use of the facilities at the yacht club. Fifteen Euros buys a day membership and with that you can enjoy the sun loungers and pool. The club is quiet at the moment which is probably why this lunch menu is offered, during peak season the bar snack menu is all that is available for lunch.

The view from the club is great, my waiter was quick and very friendly and the three courses came to just €12.50. If you are in Cala d'Or any time soon I would definitely recommend lunch at the yacht club.
