The massive influx of tourists that go through Palma de Mallorca airport every year keeps on growing as the island's popularity increases. AENA, Spain's air navigation management company, have decided to enlarge Son Sant Joan to make space for more flights and visitors.

From 2017 to 2021, almost 297 million euros will be invested in Palma airport, which is already the third largest in the country. Over 26 million passengers use its facilities every year, a number that is set to grow in the near future.

Most of the money, around 140 million, will be employed towards expanding the terminals, multiplying the number of direct boarding gates into the airport by eliminating remote parking areas, and installing new fingers, baggage carousels, travelators and lifts. The airport's runways will also be made more efficient, increasing the number of flights per day from the current 66 to 80 or one every 45 seconds.

AENA calculate that Son Sant Joan will receive 28.5 million passengers in 2021 with 210,000 flights per year. Further proof that Mallorca is one of the best tourist destinations in the Mediterranean.
