Fines for Anti-social Behaviour are Set to Clean Up Magaluf

Hitting the headlines on a regular basis, the hope is to return Magaluf to a top holiday resort

As we reported back in March the new laws are being brought in to deter the anti-social behaviour that has become all too familiar in party resorts such as Magaluf.

Many of those who descend on Magaluf each year are young British holidaymakers whose behaviour is at times, not only violent but can include urinating and stripping off in public and balcony hopping, often as a result of heavy drinking.

There are a number of deaths each year attributed to the popular activity known as 'balconing' where people jump from balcony to balcony, or into a swimming pool below and those taking part are often under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Anyone caught doing this will now face a fine of up to 1,500€.

The new legislation comes into effect from tomorrow (9th June). An additional 36 police officers have been deployed to monitor the area and to issue the fines, which will include a minimum fine of 750€ for urinating in the street or being naked in public - this fine will be applied equally to any bystanders who encourage people to commit such acts.

Local police have promised a “transition period for tourists and locals to become familiar with and abide by them". Isabel Borrego, Spain’s Secretary of State for Tourism welcomed the rules, saying, “They will foster a new framework in which all international tourists can fully enjoy their holidays in Spain in a manner that is responsible both for themselves and the destination”.
