In a bid to deter anti-social behaviour and drink related problems in the popular tourist resorts, the municipality of Calvia has announced new measures to regulate public drinking in the towns of Magaluf and Santa Ponsa.

Ahead of the 2015 summer tourist season, the new laws will be introduced from 1st May. Drinking alcohol will be banned in the streets between 22:00 and 08:00, and police will have the power to seize drinks during this time. This will include non-alcoholic drinks as they cannot guarantee the contents of drinks containers. It will also become illegal for shops to sell alcohol between midnight and 08:00 with the hope that this will cut down on the problems created by drunk tourists during the early hours of the morning.

Problems that were seen last year included the filming of a young female tourist as she was performing sex acts on men in the bar during an organised pub crawl. The new laws will also regulate these events which are organised by tour operators and bars to increase custom. They will no longer be able to promote drinking and sex games in their publicity material and they will only be allowed to host one pub crawl per day, between 20:00 and midnight and with a maximum of 20 people.

A spokesman for the town hall has said, "The common aim here is reaching agreements that give maximum guarantees over the security and quality of services tourists to Magaluf receive, to improve Magaluf's image as a tourist destination in national and international markets."

It is hoped that the new laws will create a more pleasant environment and over the coming years it will decrease the number of drink related accidents, injuries and deaths on the beautiful holiday island of Mallorca.
