Nadal, Spain's flag bearer at Rio Olympics
The Mallorcan will carry the Spanish flag at the opening ceremony
Rafa Nadal's status as one of Spain's most important sportsmen has been once more confirmed. He has been chosen as the country's flag bearer for the second time in a row, after having to give up carrying the red and yellow banner in London 2012 due to his ongoing injuries.
The Manacor-born tennis player has been struggling with a wrist injury that forced him to back out of the Roland Garros tournament. He seems to be feeling better and is going to take part not only in Rio 2016's singles competition, a category for which he won a gold medal at Beijing 2008, but also doubles and mixed doubles.
Spain aims to achieve 18 medals in Rio, close to the 20 medals record at Barcelona 1992. Hopes are set on athletics, swimming and gymnastics, as well as badminton, kayaking, taekwondo, triathlon, sailing, basketball and tennis; not so much on Nadal because of his bad wrist, but Garbiñe Muguruza who took this year's Roland Garros trophy home.
So, tune in for the opening ceremony this evening to watch the Mallorcan tennis player lead Spain's Olympic team!
