A day at Santa Ponça Christmas Market 2018

Festive German Christmas market, perfect for families

featured in Events reviews Author Jose Rains, Mallorca Reporter Updated

On December 2nd, I joined a whole host of families as they flocked to Santa Ponsa’s Christmas Market, held in the industrial area of Son Bugadellas.

Walking through the gates on a sunny Sunday lunchtime, it soon became apparent that this particular market was popular among families with young children. Around the edge of the market, we spotted several children wearing big smiles as they enjoyed the activities on offer, including trampolines, bungees and a bouncy castle. In the middle, an open-air children’s flea market dominated the area with various stalls offering all kinds of second-hand children’s clothes, toys and more at some appealing prices.

The large tents at the edge of the market took a more traditional German style market format with plenty of stalls to pick up some stocking fillers. There was a wide range of different items on offer including jewellery, scarves, gloves, handmade soaps, candles and other trinkets. Within the market, you can also admire the largest Lego exhibition in Spain – which appeared to be equally eye-catching to both adults and children alike. The model of the Neuschwanstein Castle certainly caught my attention!

Like many markets – in whatever form in Mallorca, it’s all about the refreshments for many. There was certainly something for everyone scattered around the whole market but Germans seeking some Christmas home comforts might be especially pleased with the offering. The German influence on the island was highlighted with many stalls selling some of their national produce including beers, Gluhwein, food like potato pancakes and sweet treats in the form of little biscuits.

Outside there was a stage where children from the local schools were performing throughout the day alongside magicians, clowns and live music acts. In front of the stage and around the market, benches were set up providing the perfect base for families to congregate whilst consuming some of the market's goods.

If in need of a caffeine fix after all that food, then the Coffee Bike looked to be a popular place to indulge. And having a bit of a sweet tooth at the moment, the Belgian waffles at Jutta Waffle Bakery were a big temptation! Or, if you are looking to escape to a child-free zone or to warm your cockles with your favourite tipple, then the bar inside the cabin seemed to be the spot where the adults congregated to get their own kind of ‘merry’.

Santa Ponsa’s Christmas market’s doors will be open until December 16th 2018. Entrance is free and parking is easy, so you can just pop along for an hour to wear out the kids, or pass the whole day by here. If you are looking to get into the festive spirit of things in the south west of Mallorca, it’s well worth a trip!
