featured in Restaurant reviews Author Jose Rains, Mallorca Reporter Updated

Lola is a vibrant gastro-lounge bar in Cala d’Or receiving rave reviews for its range of drinks and instagrammable food, making it a must for any visitor to the area.

Sitting at the top of Carrer d'en Toni Costa, one of the main restaurant streets in Cala d’Or’s town centre, you can’t miss this place. Lola's got a summery surf-shack vibe going on. The blend of driftwood, surf boards, plants and bright pastels used throughout the furnishings will catch your eye and invite you in.

I took a seat at one of the tables on the terrace with a friend, and we were promptly greeted by Dave, a super cool and friendly Dutch guy. He handed us the menus and we decided to take a minute to browse the drinks before ordering. Boy does this place have a choice! A never-ending list of cocktails, wines and gin & tonics are available. Beer lovers will be in heaven as there’s a separate beer menu comprising of a wide selection of craft beers, IPAs, pale ales and more – there’s even the opportunity to do a beer tasting. Smoothies, milkshakes, virgin cocktails and homemade lemonades cater for those looking for non-alcoholic options.

After seeking advice from our friendly waiter, I decided to try out one of their cocktails, the Pornstar Martini. My friend went for the classic holiday favourite, a Pina Colada. The Pornstar Martini was frothy and garnished with fruit – after my first sip, I learned that the bar staff were clearly well versed in the fine art of mixology... it was delicious! The Pina Colada was served in a quirky tiki tumbler and was as good as it gets, fresh and fruity with that all-important creamy taste.

Scanning the menu, there’s an eclectic mix of food depending on what you fancy, including brunch, tapas, salads, light bites and more. The marvellous brunch menu is served from 11:00 onwards. Healthy dishes are a focal point, so think Açai fruit bowls and granola through to toasts with tasty toppings. When it comes to the toasts, the usual suspects like ‘Smoked salmon and avocado’ feature alongside more innovative creations like ‘Wicked Tuna with wasabi mayo’ and ‘Beef carpaccio with parmesan and rucola’.

Tapas and light bites are served from 12:30 until closing. Age-old favourites like fried squid, patatas bravas, pimientos de Padron and Spanish tortilla can be ordered. You can also get your hands on a platter of Jamon Iberico de Bellota or Manchego cheese. Or if you want something a little lighter, then perhaps a trusty salad might tempt you.

I decided to opt for the ‘Açai fruit bowl with coconut and chai’. My dining companion steered in the direction of savoury and selected the ‘Mashed Avocado, feta and tomato’ combo. Each was presented as a work of art and the portion sizes were humungous, something certainly worth writing home about.

After our feast, we spent some time relaxing and watching the world go by. This is the kind of place you can hang out for hours, sipping on your favourite drinks and indulging in some great snacks. Having spent a few hours here, I noticed a wide range of people sitting at the tables, which didn't surprise me as there was something for everyone.

Some time had passed before I moved inside to explore Lola’s interior where the surfer, beach-hut theme continued to impress. There were tables for lounging and tables for dining. The use of neon lights throughout was a fun ingredient, as were the pink flamingos and other retro beach items. Lola is somewhat reminiscent of the legendary Club Tropicana, I thought to myself.

Coming back to the terrace, we saw some of the tapas heading out to the tables around us and spontaneously decided to order some. We chose to sample the ‘Iberico ham croquettes’and the ‘Spicy prawns’. Once again they didn’t disappoint. The jumbo-sized prawns were super spicy, just how I like them, however not for the faint-hearted. And the croquettes were creamy and delicious.
