Refined Japanese food and a welcoming atmosphere

On Saturday, February 1st, I went along to the 2nd edition of The SuppER Club, hosted by The Van Mallorca. This was a Japanese evening held at the trendy Zunray Yoga Studio on Calle Sant Feliu.

The team at The Van Mallorca collaborate with cool venues, designers, entertainment and other specialised services to organise pop-up supper clubs and other events in unique locations around Mallorca throughout the year. The idea is to bring together those that work and live here, and are looking to network and socialise with like-minded people, but tourists passing by are also welcome. At the same time, these events give people the opportunity to travel the world with their taste buds, as each edition embraces a different international concept with Japanese, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, Central and South American style evenings on the agenda, each with a different vibe depending on the location.

In the days leading up to the event, the Japanese-inspired menu was advertised on their Instagram account and, for €39.50 patrons would enjoy a drinks reception, live music and a three-course menu with wine and water included. There was the option to bring your own alcohol (BYOB) too.

I gathered some friends to sign-up for this event and we headed into the heart of Palma’s old town at around 19:30. Zunray Yoga Studio sits in one of Palma’s loveliest hidden courtyards, where we noticed a few people gathered outside on these particularly warm winter evening. Walking into the reception area, we were greeted with an Aperol infused drinks reception amongst the yoga mats – already proving to be a night to remember! The guests in attendance were all arriving and making introductions, whilst enjoying their first tipple.

The room where we would be dining had been closed off, keeping us all in suspense for the time being. By 20:30, the sound of music inside coincided with our permission to enter and the doors opened. As we walked in, we saw how the yoga studio had been transformed into a candlelit haven and we were greeted by a girl playing the hang (a steel-like drum). Behind some white draping curtains, low candlelit tables were laid exquisitely with white tablecloths and embellished with pink blossom flowers.

Paying tribute to our venue, yoga bricks were to be our seats for the evening. Internationally renowned Steen Thottrup was responsible for the design and music, and really pulled out all the stops to create the perfect setting to go with the Japanese menu. It was certainly an innovative setting and wildly romantic, possessing that wow-factor.

To start with, a stunningly presented Sushi Qi Salad with Beetroot Rice, Rice Flour Tempura Asparagus Wasabi and Ginger Mayo was set down in front of us. Being a lover of starters, this for me was the star of the show. It was followed by Traditional Vegetarian Ramen with Red Cabbage, Rice Noodles, Nori Tofu, Shitake Mushrooms and Siracha Egg. A healthy, light dish. And to satisfy any sweet cravings, Sake Macerated Berries with Chopped Almonds and Clementines was the finale.

The Van Mallorca and its partners for the evening delivered a memorable evening and we all came away from the meal guilt-free as the food all felt very healthy, very fitting for the yoga-studio setting. It’s also worth noting the food was thought through carefully, catering for both vegan and gluten-free diets. A rare find in Mallorca.

There will be more themed supper club nights throughout. Max, the owner of The Van Mallorca, has even told us that they're looking for a permanent residence in 2020. Their aim is to bring more internationally recognised visitors and entertainment, as well as guest chefs from across the world, Mallorca and Ibiza.

Not only do these guys host the supper clubs but they specialise in private events and dinners in various locations around Mallorca. So, if you are looking for help in putting together an event on the island, The Van Mallorca is at your service.
