Skating on Ice in Palma de Mallorca

featured in Activity reviews Author Nikki Hearmon, Mallorca Correspondent Updated

Having a little girl proved the perfect excuse for a trip into Palma de Mallorca earlier this week to visit the newly erected indoor ice rink. The Pista de Gel Ice Park has been created as part of the Christmas celebrations in Palma and is situated at Parc des ses Estacions opposite Plaza Espanya, right next to the train station. It seems to be the hottest, or should I say coolest attraction on everyone´s lips right now. And having now been, I am in no doubt as to why it is such a hit - it's simply good old fashioned fun.

On arrival we were greeted by happy, helpful staff who were keen to assist us on to the ice. I was more than a little dubious, having not skated for over 15yrs but to my surprise it was easy. My 5 year old daughter Romanie thought it was hilarious, they provided heavy wooden penguins on ski`s that acted as a support for the little ones to help them learn. We hopped onto the ice and away Romanie went, clinging onto her penguin and somehow managing to get around the arena. There were experienced monitors skating around the arena weaving in and out of us mere amateurs, offering assistance or scooping people up off the floor. The disco lights and music added to the thrill, creating a lively and light hearted atmosphere. Eventually, hunger got the better of us and we retired to the safety of the bench seats to the side of the rink to remove our boots and collect our shoes. The rink is surrounded with Christmas market stalls, providing everything from traditional Majorcan gifts to roasted chestnuts, so we strolled around enjoying the sights and smells, eating as we went. Romanie, tired and elated feel asleep in the car but not before begging me to take her again soon.

Whilst it's no Central Park, the Pista de Gel ice rink certainly has all the charm. Well wrapped children in woolly hats and scarves, shrieks of delight and smiling faces, couples holding hands... Whether you intend to skate or spectate, it's well worth a visit and is a wonderful idea for a winter outing.

The price is €5 per person and that includes your skate hire as well - remember to take gloves! It is open all day, from 10am until 10pm, until January 30th.
